What's the difference between the Prisma Mentor Coach program and the Parent-Coach program?

Back to all frequently asked questions

Learners in grades 4-8 can join our Parent-Coach Program. If you want to go on your child's learning journey together and be an active part of their day-to-day Prisma experience, including tackling personalized academic feedback, assessment, and mentorship, you may enjoy being your child's coach.

What both options have in common:

  • Your child is part of a consistent, collaborative cohort of well-matched peers that meets live Monday - Thursday
  • You have full access to the Prisma curriculum and optional Clubs & Enrichments

How the options differ:

  • Feedback: If your child has a Prisma Mentor Coach (an expert Prisma educator who partners with your child), that coach reviews your child's work each day and provides personalized, actionable, specific academic feedback and support. The coach ensures your child's work is aligned to their rigor and growth needs and meets academic benchmarks while personalizing the learning to match their interests. If you select Parent-Coach, you take all of that on! A Prisma Coach doesn't have access to your child's academic work, and because they don't engage with your child's asynchronous/independent work, your child won't be part of live interventions or small group support. Prisma provides training and support to you so you're well equipped to coach your child. Accountability for your child's academic progress is your repsonsibility.
  • Assessment: With a Prisma Mentor Coach, the Prisma educator determines whether your child earns badges based on badge criteria and the associated competencies and standards the badges map to. They also provide mastery-based assessment and communicate with you about your child's progress. As a Parent-Coach, you take assessment on, too! You're responsible for determining whether and when you child earns badges so we update their Prisma transcript to reflect the mastered skills and competencies.
  • 1-on-1 Coaching & Mentorship: Learners who have a Prisma Mentor Coach meet with their coach bi-weekly for deeper mentorship and goal-setting. They can reserve optional weekly office hours 1-on-1 and have 30 minutes of additional live group and breakout room support Monday - Thursday. They also can chat with their coach and get coach feedback and support directly within their asynchronous work. The coach challenges your child to do their best, supports them where needed, offers appropriate accommodations and differentiates the learning to match their needs, including amping it up and challenging them to deepen their learning and earn their badges with Distinction. Mentorship isn't just academic. It also includes executive functioning and social emotional growth goals and connecting with your child around their interests so they feel seen, known, and invested in. As your child's Parent-Coach, you take on this mentorship role!

The Parent-Coach program can be a great fit for parents who are experienced homeschoolers, educators, or otherwise feel both competent and have the daily time capacity to take on the above roles in their child's education.
