How are reading and writing taught?

Back to all frequently asked questions

We believe that Reading & Writing are essential skills not only for future academic success, but for success in any field of interest. To show learners the real-world importance of literacy, we take an interdisciplinary approach, and weave reading & writing skills through our themes

Each theme includes a corresponding Literacy Journal with reading and writing activities tailored to your learner’s level. Live Literacy Lab workshops incorporate instruction in key skills, fun collaborative writing exercises, and opportunities to share work with peers.

In Prisma Lower School (grades 4-5) and Middle School (grades 6-8), all learners read, analyze, and discuss a shared book connected to the theme. Writing activities build intentionally throughout the year and throughout your child’s time at Prisma. Learners work up from building foundational grammar skills in small groups to completing an end-of-year capstone essay.

In Prisma High School, learners choose a text of their choice to analyze each session and can also elect to participate in advanced Honors Book Clubs. Literacy Journals prepare high school learners for college-level writing, with extra focus on research, citation, and structure while maintaining an emphasis on free expression and creativity.

Additionally, Prisma learners focus on authentic writing that serves a purpose in the real world, rather than simply writing essays for a teacher to read. For example, past writing projects have included investigative journalism articles, business pitches, artist statements, video game reviews, and advocacy letters to local governments.
