Kristi Hertzog is a Mentor Coach in Prisma’s Middle School Program, as well as our Community Partnerships Coordinator.
Prisma is the world’s most engaging virtual school that prepares kids for the ever-changing world of the future. Our team of educators have a diverse background of experience on the cutting edge of teaching and learning, whether they’ve worked in brick and mortar schools or dynamic online environments. In our Meet the Team blog series, you’ll get to read more about the amazing educators behind Prisma.
Kristi Hertzog began as a Mentor Coach in Prisma’s Middle School Program in the 21-22 school year. She began additionally serving as our Community Partnerships Coordinator last year!
“Kristi sent Madeline a little note saying how much she likes seeing Madeline everyday, and Madeline grinned from ear to ear. Certainly a nice reminder of how different the relationship has been between coach and student compared to what we saw in public school.” -Pamela D., Prisma Parent
Where are you based?
I live on a farm in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania with my husband Dave and our four daughters: Camryn (18), Brynlee (14), Aubrey (12), and Courtney (12). Camryn, our oldest, is an adult with an Intellectual Disability and Autism. Currently, we're purchasing the house adjacent to our farm, with the aim of creating a space where Camryn and other adults with Developmental Disabilities can work, live, and enjoy life. I also envision this as a welcoming environment for our Prisma Community!
Tell us a little bit about your background in education prior to joining Prisma.
After dedicating 17 years to teaching English at Norristown Area High School, I made the difficult decision to step away from the profession in 2017. The direction the education system was heading didn't align with my beliefs, prompting me to embark on a personal journey of exploring alternative education. During this time I had the opportunity to homeschool my own children, immersing myself in their educational development. I ventured to Austin, Texas, where I underwent the rigorous onboarding system offered by the Acton Network. Through Acton, I discovered the true essence of becoming a self-directed learner, gaining invaluable insights along the way. Then, in 2021, while listening to a podcast, I serendipitously stumbled upon Prisma. Instantly, I knew I had discovered what I had been searching for all along – an educational approach that perfectly aligned with my vision for my own children's education.
What is your favorite part about your role as a Learning Coach at Prisma?
As a Learning Coach, what brings me joy are the unique and meaningful relationships I cultivate with Prismarians and Prisma Families. I particularly treasure the dedicated support time each week to sit down with a Learner during 1:1s, and delve into their world. This opportunity allows me to connect with them on a deeper level and gain a comprehensive understanding of their needs and aspirations. Moreover, the laughter that fills the air at Prisma is something I cherish! I take pleasure in incorporating moments of silliness and fun into our cohort's activities. There's nothing quite like the joy of laughter, especially when it comes alongside the incredible learning experiences we embark upon together.
You also serve as our Community Development Coordinator. Can you tell us more about the fun experiences you create for parents and families?
Prisma transcends the boundaries of a traditional school; it encompasses a vibrant tapestry of connection that has profoundly impacted me since my first day. One of my goals is to provide our families with abundant opportunities for connection. Over the past two years, our adventures have taken us to Costa Rica, New York City, Colorado, Canada, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, and New Jersey! We've witnessed the power of shared experiences, with kids journeying together to summer camps, such as a theatre camp in Pennsylvania, and a back-to-school camp in Minnesota. Even if a family departs from Prisma, the ties within our community remain, embodying the sentiment of "Once a Prismarian, always a Prismarian!”
You have the unique opportunity to see Prisma from multiple perspectives, since you are the parent of three Prismarians! What has Prisma been like as a parent?
As a parent of two middle school Prismarians and one high school Prismarian, my heart is filled with immeasurable joy! What brings me even greater delight is witnessing my children's unwavering dedication to the Prisma program, as they choose to return year after year. Brynlee, my daughter, had an exceptional academic journey in a traditional brick and mortar school. However, she decided that Prisma High School surpassed any other option. Her choice is a testament to the impact our program has on students' lives.
As a parent, I am grateful that my children never express a single complaint about attending school! It is a testament to the incredible environment at Prisma.
If you could pick one skill that all kids should master to prepare for the world of the future, what would it be and why?
Effective communication and collaboration are essential skills that often prove to be challenging in the "real world." While achieving academic success, high SAT scores, and gaining admission to prestigious colleges may appear to be important, these accomplishments are nothing without relationship skills!
My ultimate goal is to equip children with the ability to find joy and fulfilment through genuine, authentic relationships. I strive to prepare them to wholeheartedly embrace connections and fully engage with others. It is in this realm that life's true value lies.
What do you like to learn about, or what is something new you learned recently?
I adore learning about everything! As a voracious reader and podcast enthusiast, my passion for continuous learning knows no bounds. A significant shift occurred in my life when we relocated to a farm in 2020. Prior to this experience, I had never been exposed to the wonders of gardening! However, fueled by curiosity and a desire to cultivate a green thumb, I have wholeheartedly embraced this new endeavour. Each day presents an opportunity to deepen my understanding and hone my skills, allowing me to blossom alongside the plants I nurture.
